Meaningful youth engagement
Youth engagement is strongest when young people are treated as participants rather than simply an audience. They bring insight into the pressures, opportunities and community issues affecting their generation.
Programs should have clear safeguarding practices, appropriate adult boundaries, accessible participation and a defined purpose.
Mentorship
A mentor can help a young person build confidence, explore interests and think through decisions. Effective mentorship is patient, respectful and realistic.
The goal is not to direct every choice. It is to help a young person develop their own judgment, identify trusted supports and recognize when to ask for help.
Family communication
Families can create a safer environment by discussing online behaviour, emergency contacts, transportation plans, boundaries and how to respond when something feels wrong.
Conversations are more useful when they are regular and calm rather than occurring only after a problem.
Privacy and photographs
Do not publish photographs or identifying information about children without appropriate permission. Community stories can often be told without naming individual young people.
Official youth programs and resources should be linked directly rather than copied in a way that may become outdated.
